5 Simple Ways to Give Your Social Media Profile Some Love

If you’re anything like me, Valentine’s day is yet another reason to treat yourself. And as a girlie whose love language is physical touch, Valentine’s day is the crown jewel when it comes to the *luxurious* self care services that align with my love language. Everything gets discounted in the name of love. I got a spray tan the other day for $14. $14?!?!!?! This season has me like…

Facial: Confirmed

Spray Tan: Booked

Dedicated at home manicure time: Reserved

An excessive nightly skin care routine: On repeat

Which leads me to my main point (calling out all my business owners reading this)! If this is the season of self love and your brand is an extension of who you are … why not give your social media profiles some extra love this season?

The relevance and importance of updated social media profiles is, and I cannot stress this enough, a MUST!

I curated five simple ways to give your social media profiles some love

this season. ↴

Check On Your Profile Photo

Your profile photo is the first thing people see when they land on your page, so you want to make sure it makes a good first impression

As a jump start, look at your profile photo with me right now:

  • Is it blurry?

  • Is it an older version of a logo?

  • If it’s a logo, can you read it easily?

  • If it’s an image, does it showcase your brand’s personality?

  • Does it have any negative space that wasn’t intentional?

If you consider these questions and have no doubts, you’re golden!

But as a reminder, don't just set it and forget it! I’d suggest changing up your profile picture at least every year to keep things fresh. If your brand has a physical product, you could swap in seasonal product images to showcase what your brand is up to. Just make sure the vibe remains consistent with your brand identity.

An outdated or irrelevant profile picture can make you seem disconnected, so be sure to update it regularly as needed!

Review Your Following List

Social media is meant to be, well, social. However, it's important not to go overboard with who you follow. I suggest taking the time to review the accounts you currently follow to ensure they are relevant, active, and still provide value to you.

1. Unfollow Accounts Irrelevant to Your Industry

Declutter your following list by unfollowing accounts that have nothing to do with your niche or industry. Keeping your following count trimmed down to just those related to your business helps streamline your feed and allows you to better focus on accounts that matter. Generally, you want people you follow to be potential customers, industry thought leaders, accounts within your brand niche, etc. Try to avoid following random accounts!

2. Follow More Accounts in Your Niche

Seek out and follow new accounts that align closely with your brand, products or services, and target audience. Expanding your connections in your niche helps boost engagement and allows you to monitor relevant influencers, competitors, and more.

3. Analyze Your Follower-to-Following Ratio

Bestie, I’m afraid to tell you this… but if you follow too many accounts in comparison to your follower count, it can look spammy. (Don’t shoot the messenger!!!) Generally, you’d want more followers than accounts you are following to appear authoritative in your industry.

Riddle me this, are we attributing credibility to an account that has 187 followers and is following 1,054 accounts? Or would we automatically believe an account is more relevant and credible if they had 1,054 followers and were following a few hundred accounts?

PRO TIP : Avoid indiscriminately following thousands of accounts or using follow/unfollow techniques, as this will tank your engagement rate.

Refresh Your Bio

In addition to your profile photo, your social media bio is often the first impression someone gets of your brand. Take some time to refresh your bio to make sure it accurately represents who you are, what you sell, what you provide, etc.

The key elements of a strong bio include:

  • Your Brand Name – This should be front and center so people know who you are immediately.

  • Your Industry/services – Provide a brief description of what you do. For example, "Dog training company based in San Francisco".

  • A Unique Selling Proposition (USP) – Your USP is what makes you different from your competitors. Are you offering something they aren’t? Do you have lower prices? Do you have proof of concept?

  • Contact Info - Social platforms have embedded icons that will take a user straight to your website or email. Be sure to include your website within a hyperlink! Don’t just type your email in the bio section, you want your leads to do as little work as possible. In addition, add your email and/or phone number or other ways for people to get in touch with you.

    • Pro tip: Don’t list your personal phone number unless you are comfortable with anyone having access to it. If you don’t have a business number and you aren’t comfortable with listing your personal phone number. Your email is enough!

  • Touch of Personality - Let your brand's tone and voice shine through. Are you funny? Sophisticated? Expert? Choose descriptive words or emojis that reflect you.

Your bio has limited space, so be succinct. Lead with the most important information. Remove any outdated details. A refreshed bio helps potential customers understand at a glance what you offer and why they should follow you. It's an opportunity to make a great first impression.

Revamp Your Story Highlights

Your story highlights are the primeeee real estate to showcase your brand personality and connect with your audience. But over time, your highlights can get cluttered with irrelevant or outdated content.

Here's my suggestions to give your story highlights a refresh:

  • Take a look through all of your current highlights and delete any that are no longer relevant. This can include time-sensitive content like promotions that have ended or stories that were added to the highlight “67 weeks ago”, it’s out with the old and in with the new!

  • Look at your archive of recent stories that represent your brand well and add them into highlights. Engaging, behind-the-scenes, and entertaining content performs best.

  • Organize your highlights into clear sections. For example, group product highlights together and company culture content in another section.

  • Prioritize highlights that contain important company information like your hours, contact info, or shipping details. This makes it easy for visitors to find key details at a glance.

Just listen to our fearless leader, Sharpay Evans. It’s OUT with the OLD and IN with the NEW!

With revamped highlights, you can give new visitors an overview in seconds. Refreshing this content keeps it focused, intentional, and optimized to connect with your audience!

Update Your Profile Links

Keeping your profile links up-to-date and relevant is an important part of social media management.

Here are some of my top tips:

  • Remove any broken or outdated links in your bio or Linktree. There's nothing more frustrating for followers than clicking on a dead link. Doing a regular audit of your links ensures they all work is worth the hassle.

  • For my Linktree or landing page users:

    • Add any new, important links. Be sure your bio has a link to your website, online shop or other essential destinations. Linking to your latest content is also useful: like blog posts, freebies, promotions, or other content categories. This gives followers quick access and helps promote what's new. Rotate these out as you publish fresh content!

    • Check that all links point followers to valuable destinations. Each one should serve a purpose, whether driving traffic or conversions. Remove any that are no longer useful.

Keeping your profile links trimmed down and regularly updated is essential. It's a small but powerful part of profile management.
